OLPC XO Laptop

Taiwan-based Quanta Computer, in collaboration with the non-profit One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) Foundation, has started production yesterday of the Quanta Computer OLPC XO laptop, which is at the center of the give one, get one program that will provide laptops to children in developing countries. The kid-friendly, lime-green-and-white XO laptop operates on a free Linux operating system, offering 256MB of DRAM with 1,024 MiB SLC NAND flash. The dual-mode, 7.5-inch diagonal, 1,200-by-900 TFT LCD screen display runs in two modes: a sunlight-readable, 200-dots-per-inch, black and white display; or switch to the 800-by-600 color backlit display. The XO laptop runs on a WiFi Mesh network, and features an electric rechargeable extension with electrical power that can be produced manually. The XO laptop will offer support from Java and Flash, and will feature applications like Xulrunner web browser and Firefox browser; an Evince-based simple document viewer; AbiWord word processor; an RSS reader; email, chat and VOIP; a multimedia authoring and playback system; music composition and graphics kits; games; a shell; and a debugger.
